Construction of the largest NATO base in Europe has begun in Romania, which will accommodate up to 10,000 military personnel, writes Euronews .

The facility is being built on the basis of the 57th Mykhailo Kogelnychan Air Base in Konstanz County on an area of almost three thousand hectares. The €2.5 billion base project includes runways, weapons platforms, hangars for military aircraft, as well as schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital.

Earlier, in a letter to the country's parliament, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, announced that he was giving the "green light" for the operational deployment of NATO forces on his territory by 2024 in the event of serious threats to the country's national security.

This measure, according to Iohannis, will allow the North Atlantic Alliance to make decisions on the rapid deployment of joint task forces on Romanian territory in the event of a sudden serious crisis, "in order to quickly resolve the crisis and prevent its escalation."

It became known in January 2022 that the USA will transfer a thousand servicemen from Germany to Romania. The Pentagon called it temporary measures used to deter aggression and increase defense capabilities. At the same time, the NATO command in Europe announced the transfer of ships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe due to the situation with Ukraine.

In March 2022, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the North Atlantic alliance would strengthen its eastern flank and deploy four battle groups in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia.
